About

John Teer

Thanks for visiting my photography site. Here is a little of who I am and perhaps that will help create some context for my art.

I am a native of South Africa, born in Johannesburg in 1963. I immigrated to the U.S. in 1998 and am proud to be part of this great country. I love my adopted state of California and draw much of my inspiration from its varied geography and diverse culture.

Under the mentorship of photographer Robert Hansen in San Juan Capistrano, I developed the competency to express myself through my photographs. I started my work in digital and moved into film in the past few years, and this has become my medium of choice. I feel there is a certain authenticity and honesty about film. My goal is for the viewer to see the image as it was captured at that moment. I would like to take this medium back to its most basic format and create images that remind me in style of forgotten memories and my father’s holiday snaps. I feel that film produces a softness and inescapable grain that’s unexpected and out of my control. I hope this will stretch the viewer’s visual perceptions, eliciting an emotive response and interpretation while also reintroducing a visual vocabulary that is dormant in today’s hyper-realistic, high definition technology
